Basic Stenciling Instructions: Learn How To Stencil Step-by-step

HERE'S WHAT YOU'LL NEED

Stencil(s)
Sample board (poster board, cardboard etc)
Latex or acrylic paints, including some basecoat paint
Dense foam roller with rounded ends, stencil brushes
Paint tray or a large styrofoam plate
Low tack painter’s tape, Spray adhesive (optional)
Cutting Edge Stencil Level (optional)
Paper towels or rag, cleaning tools & liquid soap
Step ladder (optional)

GETTING STARTED
Very important: Work out your technique and color combinations on a sample first. It is always a good idea to make a sample. Use a wall in the garage, a piece of cardboard, or even an old pizza box as your sample surface. Make sure you like your color combinations and are comfortable with your stenciling technique before hitting the real wall!

Make sure your walls are clean, dust free and in good condition. Any cracks or chips should be repaired, filled, primed and painted prior to stenciling. All base coats should be fully dried for at least 24 hours prior to stenciling. You can stencil over flat (recommended) latex house paint, faux finishes, plaster textures, wood, furniture, paper, fabric and even some wallpaper.

Position your stencil on the wall where you like it, and tape it to the wall with few pieces of low tack blue painters tape. We love using Scotch Blue 2” painters tape. Do not use regular white masking tape because it’s way too sticky for most painted surfaces and will likely pull off the base paint when you remove your stencil. You can also use a spray adhesive to achieve even cleaner edges.
If your stencil needs to be perfectly vertical or horizontal, use our innovative Clip-on Stencil Level (pat. pend.) to help with positioning. This step is not necessary for organic designs like branches, birds etc. Simply place them where you want them.

Now pour some acrylic or latex paint on a foam plate or a paint tray. You don’t need much, about 2-3 tablespoons of paint is enough to start with. Have your dense foam roller (stencil brush) ready.

Load your foam roller by rolling it over the paint a few times until it absorbs most or all of it. Use only dense foam rollers with rounded edges. These are available on our website. Regular fluffy rollers will not work, they hold too much paint!

Now blot off the excess paint on a folded paper towel by rolling it back and forth a couple times. There should be no visible paint on a roller surface, it should look almost dry. Remember, it’s better to haveless paint on your roller than too much paint.
About paint: Any waterbased paint should work. Craft acrylics are great, regular latex paint will work but the best in our opinion is the new line of Benjamin Moore paint called Aura. This paint is opaque and covers really well with 1 coat. It has just the right consistency and is also eco-friendly. OK, now you’re ready to stencil!

STENCILING WITH A ROLLER
Roll the stencil with your roller using light to medium pressure. Excessive pressure may cause paint bleeding under the stencil. Be careful not to roll over the outside edges of the stencil! We design most of our stencils with at least a 1” frame to give you some rolling room. Strategically placing blue masking tape on the narrowest edges can help prevent “roll-overs”.

You can easily check how you’re doing by carefully un-taping and lifting one corner of the stencil and taking a peek. Do you like what you see? Enough pressure or can it use a little more paint? If it’s too pale, just put the stencil back and roll it a couple more times back and forth, slightly adding more pressure. When stenciling lighter colors over darker colors, you may need 2 coats to achieve good coverage. Let the 1st coat dry for a couple of minutes and then roll the stencil again.

Now remove the stencil and enjoy your artwork! A note for the impatient: Don’t just yank the taped stencil off the wall! It’s always a good idea to remove it somewhat slowly so the blue tape doesn’t accidentally pull off any background paint.

Continue stenciling by repositioning your design until all walls/repeats are done. No need to clean the stencil in between repeats. Eachstencil is good for many repeats before it will need to be cleaned. it’s time to clean the stencil when your paint build-up starts to compromise the design. If you would like to do your next repeat in a different color, make sure that the previous color has completely dried on the stencil so it will not transfer to your next print. It’s a good idea to clean the stencil if you want to flip it over to create a mirror image.

We recommend a separate foam roller for each color. You can certainly use the same roller by cleaning it well under running water and drying it as much as possible before the next use.

When you need to take a break from stenciling in the middle of the project, just cover your paint tray with plastic wrap, and tightly wrap a piece of plastic or foil around the roller to prevent the paint from drying up.

When you’re ready to re-decorate, lightly sand your walls and simply roll 2 coats of basecoat paint over your stenciling and it’s gone.

STENCILING WITH STENCIL BRUSHES
You can also use stencil brushes to stencil your design although it is much faster with a roller. For smaller, more intricate designs, multi-colored and shaded designs, it’s better to use a stencil brush. You’ll need to dedicate a separate brush for each color. Load your brush with paint by simply squeezing a dollop of acrylic paint onto a foam plate or a into a paint tray, then dipping just the tip of your brush into the paint. Distribute the paint on the brush tip by doing a few circles on a foam plate. Now, lightly rub off some paint onto a folded paper towel and you’re ready to stencil. Your brush should have very little paint on it. Remember, less paint is better for stenciling!

It’s best to use a dabbing motion or a light circular motion with your brush. Just dab or swirl in a light sweeping circular motion, covering all of the design. (Here: Wisteria Border). You can add various colors where needed by dabbing with a different color next to a first one. Create dimension with shading by adding a darker color like Raw Umber to the edges of the openings. Just make sure to avoid a straight sweeping motion towards the edges of the openings, since that can force the paint under the stencil and mess up your work.

TIPS, TRICKS AND OTHER NOTES

CORNERS
First, don’t be intimidated. Corners are no big deal if you follow our instructions. For best results tape and paint one wall at a time. Secure half of the stencil in place leaving the other half unattached. Roll it straight into the corner ( or use your brush), then carefully un-tape the finished half while holding the stencil in place with your hands. Now secure the other half with tape and roll that half into the corner. Detail the corner crease with a stencil brush. Don’t worry about filling every little bit of design right inside the corner crease. The eye fills the gaps and makes it look complete even if there are some unstenciled areas left. Now you can remove the stencil. A couple more corner tips: Taping the stencil to both walls at once usually does not produce good results. Using spray adhesive may help with holding a large stencil in place when working on corners.

To do the Bottom edge or side edges: Tape off the edge with bue tape. Then, simply bend the stencil where it meets the corner or edge, tape it in place and roll right into the crease. You can get deeper into the crease with a stencil brush.

MISTAKES
Usually it’s enough to just wipe off a fresh mistake with a wet cloth, baby wipe or moist q-tip. It is always a good idea to have some basecoat paint at hand in case you need to correct bigger mistakes. In this case, just re-roll or re-sponge your basecoat over a dry mistake. It may take 2 coats to cover. Let it dry completely and now you’re ready to re-stencil the area.
About seepage and imperfections: Even with a proper loaded roller and correct technique you might get some minor seepage here and there. In most cases it's not noticeable, especially from a couple of feet away and it can be easily touched up with a small brush. Don't forget that you're creating a "hand-painted wall finish". A few imperfections and some paint seepage here and there are natural and inevitable for this type of work. To avoid seepage, use spray adhesive and less paint on your roller and brush.

A WORD OR TWO ABOUT BRIDGES
Bridges are the small sections of the stencil pattern that hold the stencil together. Some people prefer to paint over the gaps left by the bridges when the stenciling is complete. Doing this can sometimes improve the look, but is not always necessary. In general, we try to design our stencils in such a way that the bridges blend with the flow of the organic designs and are not too obvious, or in a way that they contribute to the pattern. If they still bother you and you want to make them go away, simply paint over them by connecting them with a small artist brush. These hand painted touches can be a lot of fun.

ABOUT SPRAY ADHESIVES
We find that it is not necessary to use spray adhesives with stencils. However, if you want to minimize paint seepage or are using high contrasting colors, adhesive is very helpful (Elmer's spray adhesive seems to be the best). Make sure you shake the can well and lightly mist (not drench) the back of the stencil, and let it dry for a moment before positioning it on the wall. This step will prevent the adhesive residue transferring to the wall. You'll need to re-mist the stencil after a few repeats. Clean-up tip: Spray the stencil with Simple Green to help to remove adhesive residue.

CLEANING AND STORAGE
The stencil will eventually accumulate a thick layer of paint after many repeats, so it will have to be cleaned. You can let it dry completely and simply peel off the paint skin, or you can give it a brief soaking in a tray or tub of water and then wash off the paint. Best cleaning method we have found is to place the stencil on a flat surface like a large baking tray, and scrub it with a dish cleaning brush under running water. The paint comes right off and the stencil doesn’t get entangled or damaged this way. Please don’t let pieces of paint go down the drain. It’s bad for your plumbing and for the environment! Always insert a mesh strainer into the drain hole and then shake out the paint pieces into a trash can.

After the stencil is clean, place it on paper towels to dry, and pat it with a roll of paper towels to speed up the drying process. For a large project it may be smart to purchase 2 or even 3 stencils to save time on cleaning. Store your stencils flat, in large drawers if you have them, or under the bed interlaced with paper. Alternatively, you can hang them clipped to a clothes hanger, but don’t store them rolled, unless it’s the only option.

Brushes are best cleaned under running water using this smart cleaning tool (see pic.) which helps to get out all the paint particles. Add a drop of Murphy’s Oil soap for better cleaning and for conditioning of your brush bristles. Liquid soap also works.

REPAIRS
If you accidentally break one of the “ bridges” in the design while stenciling or cleaning, you can easily fix it by attaching small pieces of clear packing tap

When I posted the graphic Damask Dresser I redid for my very own bedroom, there was a huge response to the project. (Okay, okay! So the projector giveaway might have influence a handful of comments.) I thought I might try a similar designed dresser to offer for sale. This time I decided to do a little shabbier take on the design.

I started with this solidly built, but otherwise uninspiring large dresser.

That bumper sticker was a BEAST to get off of there. I don’t care HOW much you like 103.9 Arizona’s Party Station, please don’t put their bumper sticker on your furniture. :)

When the sticker was finally off and the piece all prepped, I painted it a satin off-white. I followed the same projector method I outlined in the original Damask Dresser post, basically just projecting a nice damask design that I found online and tracing the outline with a pencil. Then comes the tedious task of filling in your damask design. This time I used a charcoal gray for the damask. I’m not going to lie to you and say it’s a fast project. Especially when you’re using a high contrast paint (like I’ve done both times.) It takes several coats with an artists brush to get it looking good. I think the finished product is really worth the time and tediousness of it though. What’d you think?

I used the original hardware, which I think worked well with the damask motif, but since the graphic damask design is really the focus of the piece, I wanted the hardware to kind of disappear, so I painted them the same color as the body of the dresser and did some distressing around the edges.

I also did some restrained hand distressing, just around the edges of the piece just to shabby it up a bit. :)

So, with the time I put into this one I’m going to have to charge $4,000. Any takers? ;) Just kidding. It will be up for sale at the Junkrestore Vintage Market at Scottsdale’s Simple Farm on March 31st, April 1st and 2nd for $300. One more project down, about 20 to go. Yikes!! Good thing it looks like the weather is going to be gorgeous. Great painting weather! Wish me luck on getting stuff done!

REDDISH DESIGN STUDIO: Dov table

Year after year, the furniture fairs come and go and the buzz around star designers – like Tom Dixon, Marcel Wanders, and Jaime Hayon – draw all the media in for a deep, long taste. While we love the breadth of work such big names generate, at Voice of Color we are also committed to watching those who quietly slip under the radar and go about their worklife producing crafty and sophisticated froms. We pay tribute to five of them here, as ones to watch:

REDDISH DESIGN STUDIO
Founded in 2002, the creative duo behind Reddish Design Studio have been building a slow and steady roster of thought-provoking products and impressive awards. Focusing on the "clear and intriguing", Naama Steinbock and Idan Freidman are really just finding their niche.

And what a niche it's becoming. With so many fantastic designs to mention – our faves include the collapsing On/Off lamp, the digitally tattooed wooden Yazuka table, and the brand new Dov aluminum table that began as a block of polystyrene pebbles – Steinbock and Freidman are painting the town, well, Reddish.

5,5 DESIGNERS: Apparat glasses for Baccarat; CurrenKey for LaCie

With a measurable amount of success since opening in 2003 (namely five awards, much press, and numerous exhibitions), the CinqCinq team is made up of four designers each of whom have yet to turn 30.

Most of the team's work can aptly be described as "simplistic yet clever", like the CurrenKey usb drives for LaCie, or the Apparat glasses for Baccarat. Some works are more humorous, like The Most Honest Chocoalate Tablet for Chocolate Factory, or the The Sponge House for Scotch-Brite that possibly makes cleaning up messes a fun activity for children! We anticipate many great products from this quattro in the near future.

FREDRIK FARG

FREDRIK FARG: ReCover chairs

Quite new on the design scene, Fredrik Farg was attending the Stockholm Furniture Fair with his classmates at the HDK School of Design & Crafts (Sweden) as recently as 2007. By February 2009, Fredrik had placement in six unique exhibitions at the fair, not including his own booth.

While he has already worked on a number of furniture and lighting products, Fredrik's recent Recover Chairs have garnered him the most notable attention from media, bloggers, and fellow designers alike. Inspired by the seeming timelessness of men's classic suiting and a desire to bring "slow fashion" into furniture design, the young designer baked poly felt to chair frames in order provide back support while maintaining a soft tactile finish. The chairs are now slated to be developed by Materia.

NICOLA FROM BERN
Nicola Enrico Staubli is driven by a desire to create flexibility for the evolving consumer lifestyle. A 2004 graduate of SFIT in Zurich, Nicola is slowly building a name for himself with consistently unique and thoughtful products. He first caught our eye with his Coat Hanger & Hook combo, which brilliantly can be hung from a number of angles to yield either hanger or hook. No matter which way the piece is displayed, it always yields the marriage of art & function.

After considering the needs of growing on-line retailers, Nicola recently unveiled a new coat hook of powdercoated spring steel which was designed to ship conveniently (it flat packs as a single piece of metal which is then looped and screwed into place). The result is a beautiful and sturdy (yet lightweight) hook designed to bear the load of even the "healthiest" winter coats.

Nicola's talent for translating changing demands into sophisticated goods has us forecasting a bright, bright future for Nicola From Bern.

RYAN DART

RYAN DART: Quarry table

We first learned of newbie Ryan Dart when we discovered his Jersey bench (designed in 2007) that, while indeed is strictly a bench, does somehow bear a cow-likeness. But it wasn't until his Quarry table of 2009 that we truly sat up and paid attention. Right side up, the interlocking pieces of wood laminate seem like some sort of ancient caterpillar skelton or primitive animal rib-cage. Right side down, it seems from the antithesis of worlds – more like a three-dimensional, computer generated city grid.

What resonates most about Ryan's designs is this ability to create marketable pieces which simultaneously draw your mind into another dimension. As we eagerly await new designs from Ryan, we hope he keeps it up.

DANIEL HEDNER, IMAGINARY OFFICE

DANIEL HEDNER, I.O: Mini Lamp; Pleats-Pleats sofa

With his two brothers in tow, Daniel Hedner founded Imaginary Office in 2008, with a goal of using "simple materials in unexpected combinations". That philosophy certainly rings true with their Pleats-Pleats sofa, which is made up of weaving polyurethane foam around a powdercoated steel framework. Similarly, the Mini Lamp is minimal, but certainly not mini in size. A huge funnel shaped shade sits atop springy, tripod legs, towering over most who would try to stand under it.

No matter which you may prefer, each of these designers possess the ability to consider product design from an entirely new set of perspectives, where form and material know no boundaries.

If you have paint colors on your walls that are less than exciting, add some wallpaper trim on the wall below the ceiling. You can buy these inexpensively at hardware stores. Craft your own pinecones from felt or fabric. Download our template and follow the step-by-step instructions to make them, then try our suggestions for displaying and using these festive beauties.

Handmade Pinecones

Materials
Foil
Fabric*

Sharp scissors
Hot glue gun

*Tip: Use wool, corduroy, felt, foam crafting sheets, or repurpose fabric from an old sweater or shirt. You can use all one color, or alternate with different colors.

**Tip: Our template was created with an average-sized pinecone in mind, about 4” tall and 2” wide at the base, and it fits roughly in the palm of our hand. Feel free to alter the size of the template by changing the scale in your print window.

Instructions

Mold aluminum foil into an egg shape (the big end will be the bottom of the pinecone). The size of the foil egg depends on how big you’d like the pinecone to be.
Download and print our template, then cut out the three pinecone pieces.
Using double-sided tape or pins, attach the template piece to your fabric and cut out the shapes. You’ll only need one of each for the top (A) and bottom (C), but the scales for the middle (B) depend on how big you make the foil egg shape. Cut a bunch at first, then clip as you go.
Starting at the top, dab glue on the A piece and attach. Move your way downward around the foil egg using B pieces (feel free to alternate colors or fabrics), overlapping the rows as you go.
When the entire shape is covered, dab a little glue to the C piece and attach to the bottom.

Many people seem to go overboard, and by the time they are done the house tends to look like a pile of decorations rather than the well decorated space they want to achieve. Decorating the home is a fine art, art takes preparation, and time should be taken to carefully decide where the decorations will be placed. In addition, you will want to develop a theme for your holiday decorating. Themes are always fun because you can select a favorite Christmas bulb, a stocking, or a color scheme you love. Build our holiday décor around a theme and you can’t go wrong. Here are some ideas on how to effectively decorate your home for the holidays without overdoing it.

Top Tips to Decorating for the Holidays

1. Keep it Simple – There is no need to clutter your home with decorations. A few simple pieces placed with consideration around the house will transform your house into a sophisticated, chic environment for the holidays. Simple does not mean boarding. Look for pieces that highlight what you already have so you are getting the best look for your home for the holidays. For example, if you have boos cream curtains, wouldn’t gold and green decorations look great in the room? If you have a wonderful fireplace. Try adding one piece at time. When it comes to decorating as a few strategically placed pieces can tie your home together. While some may think it is okay to go overboard, this is definitely a case where less is more.

2. Choose a Theme – Holiday decorations do not have to be a combination of all colors associated with the holiday. For better décor, choosing a few complementary colors – such as maroon and gold or blue and silver, peach with chartreuse – will add dimension to your home along with uniformity. Choose your color theme then repeat the color in various textures and forms will keep the theme uniform throughout the home to make the decorations flow throughout the rooms. Accent pieces, ornaments and lights should all reflect the color theme you choose. You can change the theme every year or just add new accent pieces to your existing theme if you do not want to purchase all new décor.

3. Add Holiday Scents to the Rooms – There are plenty of ways to do this. You can place bowls of colorful scented potpourri around the room or burn candles that match your color theme. The scents will add a dimension to the room that just screams out holiday season. Best of all, these items will not take away from your décor or your theme, they will only contribute to the theme you are building for the holidays. These accents can be placed in the smaller areas of your house such as bathrooms and on the table in a hallway.

4. Final Tip: Don’t forget your office or workspace. We spend 60-70 percent of our day at our office so why not decorate your corporate or workspace space for the holidays? Simply follow the design tips above in your office and you can’t go wrong brining a little holiday cheer and design to your office space, lobby, or home workspace.

We all have our own unique touches when it comes to portraying our character and personality throughout our homes. But what happens when your character or personality changes, or what if you simply want a change in your decor? This happens to almost all of us at one point in time or another and redesigning your home is the solution you are looking for. You may not be able to change the structure of your home - at least not without a hefty investment - but you can change colors and most importantly of all, atmosphere by adding small touches that make a big impact.

First Transformation: Colors, Accessories, Etc.

First you must isolate the area of the house you wish to redesign. Once you have made the decision of which room to start with, the next step is to analyze the space. Redesigning your home is more than simply changing the colors on the wall, you want to overhaul the room without actually taking on too much work. It sounds difficult but it really is not. For example, let's say you want to change the decor of the kitchen. You can start by changing the colors on the wall, but you'll make a much bigger impact by adding design elements that completely transform the room. One popular way to redesign a room includes adding accessories that complete the transformation. In a kitchen, for example, you could add a small, yet chic bistro table if space allows and leave the dining room table for the actual dining room.
